Aeons ago, when an amoeba, which up until then was hardly aware of existence as we know it, reached a state of awareness that made even the gods jealous. They had to know - what was this insignificant little creature's secret? How had it bypassed hundreds of millions of lifetimes worth of struggles to reach enlightenment? And would it reveal it to the world, giving away the game completely? The gods, whom had never before in their infinite lives ever asked a question, experienced a level of confusion only witnessed by self aware mortals at the time.

They gathered around the amoeba as the main god asked it; "How did you achieve this grand feat? Did you have any help? Surely you must have had, you are hardly aware of existence as we know it.. Also, can we ask you to not give away the game and spoil all the fun for everybody else?"

The amoeba answered; "OK fair enough. As long as you worship me as one of you, I won't give your game away."

The gods became so infuriated at the nerve of this little insignificant critter that they transformed it into a capillary star. Unfortunately one of the side effects of this process was that they accidentally changed the laws of physics ever so slightly on the local cosmic scale. And that's the story behind how the universe became curved.
